I suppose we should take a moment and talk some college football.  It is the off-season and college football will not be the hottest topic in sports for a while.

Signing Day has come and gone and all of the fans’ and the coaching staffs’ mouths are watering over the future of their programs.  Everything seems fine and dandy, and a national championship is on the horizon.

I am really no different.  I like to peruse the list of commitments for my Hokies and see what the future may look like.  I do, however, take it all in with a grain of salt as they say.  Rating the recruiting classes is not an exact science as we all know.  It only gives a glimpse of the future, and a good class can turn into mediocrity by the time these guys actually get out on the field.  Just ask Al Groh and his Cavaliers.  How many years in a row did they have top 10 and top 15 classes and what did they ever win?

The big names usually get the big recruits and this year was not different.  Checking out ESPN.com and Rivals, you’ll see there is some disagreement on the top classes.  ESPN has Miami #1, while Rivals thinks Alabama has the best class.  Clemson is thought to have the #2 class by ESPN, while Rivals has them all the way down at #12.

Looking at both of the lists, you can see they have a lot in common.  Miami, Clemson, Florida, Alabama, USC, Georgia, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Ohio State seem to have the consensus best classes.  As far as conferences go, no surprise the SEC looks to have cleaned house.  The SEC had 6 of the top 25 classes, the ACC and Big 12 had 5, and the Big 10 had 4.

The recruiting process can be exciting, and you can’t win without the players, but remember you have to be able to coach’em up if you want to win.  But, by the looks of the 2008 class, the big boys are going to keep winning.
