My favorite time of the year is over. I am a college football junkie, and I am left every year at about this time somewhat unfulfilled. I would like more games, but my girlfriend has had enough. The season was probably the weirdest one I have witnessed dating back to the year Nebraska went for 2 against the ‘Canes in the Orange Bowl and gave away the national championship.
My favorite moment of the entire season was seeing Appalachian State block Michigan’s game-winning field goal attempt. Or possibly Stanford’s touchdown pass to the sideline of the end zone to pull off the second craziest upset of the season. Or maybe it was the entire overtime of the Notre Dame Navy game. I could go on and on but the point is—it was a good season.
My least favorite moment is easy. I can still remember the knot in my stomach as I watched Matt Ryan’s pass float through the air in the last seconds and fall into Callender’s hands behind the Virginia Tech coverage.Â
One moment that I will never forget about the 2007 season is not really a favorite or least favorite moment, but it was the most memorable for me. I attended the home-opener of Virginia Tech as they played East Carolina. Even though it was only East Carolina, and even though it was a noon game and the tailgaters had less time to prepare than for a night game, it was one of the loudest and most emotional beginnings of a game that I have witnessed—and I have witnessed many.
Georgia, USC, Oklahoma, and Florida look like the early favorites. Can Tebow repeat as the Heisman Trophy winner? Can Ohio State lose another National Championship Game? Will we get any closer to some sort of playoff?
After all is said and done, I can’t wait for next year. It’ll be another year of surprises. Nothing beats College Football.
