Most people think it is ludicrous to even consider the idea that the Giants could beat the Patriots in today’s Super Bowl.  I don’t think it to be that ludicrous, though I don’t think it will happen.  But just for a moment, let’s ponder the idea and its aftermath.

Eli Manning would begin to be thought of as a “tough as nails”, “unshakeable”,  ”big-game”, ”insert ridiculous cliched phrase here” QB.  He would be the king of New York (until he threw an interception in the first pre-season game next year).  Tom Coughlin would instantly become a speakeable name when considering future Hall of Fame coaches, but would probably be fired next year after a 1-5 start.  And maybe, just maybe, it would wipe that stupid, smug smile off of Tiki Barber’s face, because the Giants are a better team without him (that is the one positive).

On the New England side, this whole perfect regular season would be thrown down the toilet.  It would be worth nothing, and the dominance of this team throughout the first 18 games would be quickly forgotten as the years moved past.  And the grumbles about them cheating against the Rams and the Jets would be what we all remember the most.  Instead of the 2007 season and 2008 Super Bowl giving us one of the greatest teams of all-time as the champs, it would give us what many may consider the worst team to ever win a Super Bowl.  I am not a Pats fan, but I think it would be a let down for the entire season if they don’t win this game.

The Patriots have gathered quite a few haters that would love to see them lose this game, but look what it would do to the NFL.  Do we really want Archie’s boyz winning this many Super Bowls?  I suppose I will have to root for the Pats, just because it is the responsible thing to do.

    Tom -

I rooted for the Pats and I am just recovering from the loss. All of your ‘ what if” scenarios seem to be ringing through. Even 2 months later.
