So finally it has happened, Priest Holmes has decided to hang up his shoes and finally retire- I can’t say that I am all that sad about it.  I think it was about time that he left, he has been used less and less through the years and a clean break will be well for him as a person.  Just sitting on the sidelines doesn’t cut it in the NFL- if he can’t contribute to the on-field performance then who cares if he’s still in the NFL.  But nevertheless, he has contributed very much to the National Football League and that should be honored today, the day before Thanksgiving.

After graduating from college, he joined the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 1997. From there he played with the Ravens for two seasons before joining his anchor team, the Kansas City Chiefs.  During his stay with the Chiefs, he had a career year in 2003, when he rushed for 1420 yds and 27 TDs- then a record.  He was sidelined with injury in the 2005 season which he could never regain his former glory but he will live on to be one of the greatest running backs of all time.

Due to injuries to the 2007 Chief’s Larry Johnson, Holmes made a brief comeback but due to reasons unknown, he just recently decided to retire.  I believe anyone in his situation would do the same, one can only play football for so long- it takes a toll on the body.  Here’s good luck to Priest in all that he does in retirement!
