It puzzles me so much that a team with so much potential is squandering it in the regular season; with their smash mouth offense and great defense the possibilities were endless for San Diego- where did it all go wrong? First off, in my opinion, Philip Rivers is highly overrated and Head Coach Norv Turner is giving him too much control passing; hey, here’s a suggestion- utilize your All Star running back Ladanian Tomlinson. Turner’s playcalling may rob this very good team of a playoff berth and surrender the AFC West title to the Broncos? No, no, no and luckily they still have time to sort out their problems and hopefully they can win their division or hope for a wildcard spot. This is just another team that Norv Turner is going to drive into the ground- here’s some sound advice Norv, stick to the Offensive Coordinator position- you have less responsibility and authority and trust me that’s where you thrive.

While I am at it I will also outline a problem that is plaguing many teams in the NFL- horrible running backs all across the board. From Frank Gore to LT, there is just a lack of production and I don’t know whether to blame the players or the playcalling. Another running back that is lacking in production is Larry Johnson (LJ) of the Kansas City Chiefs, but that is due largely in part to injury. Playcalling as a whole is lacking as of late, there are some boneheaded plays being called recently and that seriously hurts the degree of play.

Amen to that… Give the ball to your HOF RB, Norv.

I think it comes down to a difference in defensive philosophy, which in turn will affect the offense.

Last year, the Chargers defense was a swarming, attacking defense. This year, that intensity has yet to be seen. They’re dropping the LBs into coverage, instead of blitzing them. Coverage hasn’t been a strong suit for the Chargers (although that could change with Cromartie). The front seven is what provided the key to their success. Because the defense was so good at stopping people, the offense didn’t have nearly as much pressure on it. Rivers and Tomlinson could relax, and play their best ball.

Another thing this year is the play of the offensive line. The attitude is different this year, compared to last year. I realize that Norv brings a more “relaxed” atmosphere, but I get the feeling that this line isn’t giving it 100%. Watch them play. They’re not run blocking like they did last year, and I suspect that if I lined up at defensive end against them, I could come away with at least 1 sack (I’m 5′7″ and weigh 220). I don’t see that same streak of nastiness and arrogance that they had last year. LaDainian Tomlinson is one of the best backs to play the game. Something needs to change, or he will be denied a Super Bowl, like Barry Sanders of the Lions.

Do you hear me Spanos Family?!
